Pudding on the Rice - Ice Cream Rival in Provo

October 8th, 2006 by Cameron

Watch out, Cold Stone! There is a new hot spot for the masses battling a sweet tooth in the unofficial Dessert Capital of the World. In the land of green jello and brownies, this east-coast-inspired dessert bar offers a refreshing change of scenery by serving up 16 variations on the somewhat unconventional dessert item of, you guessed it, rice pudding. If you are like me, you are thinking “Do people really want to go get a bowl of rice pudding for dessert?” The answer is a resounding “Oh yes,” and if you are like me, you too will be convinced after just one taste.

The first thing you notice as you walk in is the familiar design of an ice cream parlor, but with a very modern and chic, in fact futuristic, twist. That ambiance is the product of glowing white walls, vivid color splashes, and tables that hang from the ceiling. I mean, really, tables that sit on the ground are so 6 months ago. It seems that the whole idea is based off Rice to Riches, a successful rice pudding bar in New York City, down to the clever quotes and flavor names. Both places are one big play on words. They even have extremely similar plastic bowls in various colors, complete with stylish spoons. I don’t know if there is a connection between the owners, but frankly, I don’t care; it tastes good anyway. A “rice” by any other name… right?

Speaking of the taste, I have not yet had a chance to try all 16 flavors (they are rotated daily), but the ones I have tried are delicious. My personal favorites are Cinnamon Kane, Ebony and Ivory, and The Rocky Road Most Travelled, while my wife is partial to Castaway Coconut and fellow contributor Matt is bananas for Blueberry Finn. It seems that your ice cream flavor preferences translate directly to your rice pudding preferences, although that is yet to be scientifically proven. For those who still want something even more flavorful, you can choose any of 13 “Accents”, or toppings, for $0.35 per.

What it boils down to: Pudding on the Rice is not just a fun alternative to ice cream, but a tasty and affordable one, too. There are almost as many price options as there are flavors. From a party-size batch for $40 to a single serving in a chocolate cup for $1.50 and plenty in between, you don’t have to worry about breaking the bank, just expanding your horizons. Those who don’t consider rice pudding to be a contender in the dessert ring obviously have not yet been to Pudding on the Rice. Those people need to get to Provo right away and taste the future of dessert.

I’m a huge fan of Pudding on the Rice.

I first heard about the shop on 101.9 The End FM when the store’s owners gave a brief interview/pitch on the morning show with Chunga and Mister.

I have been to POTR twice within the last two months. The last time I was there was at 8:15pm on a Saturday night and the place was packed which is a great sign.

My first visit I had the Raspberry Russeau pudding and the Red Rum. Absolutely delicious. The flavor is not too rich and not too weak. Portions are very fair for the price you pay.

On my second visit I tried the Peanut Butterfuco and the Instant Karmamel. Both were delicious.

The atmosphere is fun. The decor reminds me of a 1950’s era sci-fi movie.

I would much rather eat there than ANY ice cream shop.

    Mystery Method…

Best Places to Meet Girls” was probably the most helpful to me. The author has obviously been to hundreds of bars, nightclubs, discos and through trial and error has developed a system to talk to girls. These techniques can save a shy guide from many…

Go to Miami Rice, Denville, NJ or Sarasota FL. Excellent and reasonabley priced. Totally addictive.

I was just standing over my stove making rice pudding, as I pondered ” I wonder what that name is supposed to mean — pudding on the rice “, then it hit me, and it came with visions of Gene Wilder dancing with a top hat and cane. Puttin’ on the Ritz - How did it take me so long to figure it out?

    Wow, I feel dumb.
